One of the main reasons tourists flock to Egypt yearly is to visit the many stunning sites of early human history. To touch and walk along the same avenues as the great Pharaohs and even legendary figures such as Alexander the Great, or even Plato. To be able to carry something of this home is almost a must to visitors, however that is where one needs to be careful.
When most people think of Egypt their minds drift to the archaeological marvels of the ancient Egyptians and the thousands of years of artifacts and antiquity left behind, and more over it's massive cities that have stood through the eons and remain alive today. However many people don't think about some of the other things Egypt has to offer. C',on, grab your scuba gear and lets go shark watching. Ask your mummy first I don't want you getting into trouble.....okay that was horrible, I'll do better next time.
I went to see a really fascinating exhibit today about Egyptian burial rituals. It was kind of amazing how much we know about death culture in such an ancient society, but the exhibit displayed sarcophagi from both the rich and the poor, amulets used in burials, jars used for organs, headrests and lifelike paintings. In some respects, our knowledge of Egyptian culture, which seems to surpass our knowledge of other ancient societies, makes us feel that much closer—and fascinated. On the other hand, certainly we don’t know everything there is to know about this society captivated by ceremony and beauty, and that type of exoticism intrigues us. Whatever the reason, Americans are absurdly obsessed with ancient Egypt. Namely, that obsession seems to be that of the mummy.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities is a must see for anyone visiting Cairo. The Museum, established in 1902 stands as the heart of all things related to the study of Egyptian history and art. With over 120,000 some exhibits it's the only place to see many artifacts discovered over the centuries.
