Egypt’s Must-See Places
View From Mount SinaiIf you’ve got Egypt on your list of places to visit before you die, you’re like a lot of people. And why shouldn’t you be? Whether for historical significance, ageless wonder or timeless beauty, the lure of Egypt is strong.
But most people have the same places on their list of spots to hit, such as the Valley of the Kings, a Nile cruise or a trip to the Giza Pyramids. While these are obviously hugely significant places to see, they’re not the only ones that Egypt has to offer. Below are a few must-see places that the average tourist may not have on his or her list of places to explore—yet!
Marvel in Aswan: The Aswan Dam itself is an incredible achievement, but there are also plenty of temples to near the city—such as The Temples of Abu Simbel, the Philae Temple, the Kom Ombo Temple, and the Temple of Edfu. Elephantine Island is a gorgeous place to visit as well.
Explore Luxor: While you may have seen the Temple of Karnak in The Mummy Returns, it’s worth a real-life visit, as it’s considered one of the most amazing architectural structures ever built. There is also typically an evening light show. While in the city of Luxor, you may want to stay in an old yet breathtaking room at the Old Winter Palace.
Get Lost in Cairo: Cairo offers an abundance of wonders. From the bustling shopper’s extravaganza and “city within a city” Khan El-Khalili to the amazing treasures and mummies found at the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, there is surely something to delight your senses in Cairo. Near Cairo, you’ll also find the Siwa Oasis, considered one of the loveliest places in Egypt. The Hanging Church is also in Cairo, and the City of the Dead is near the city as well.
Swim the Red Sea: The Red Sea is considered one of the best places on earth for diving adventures. While you’re there, you can explore the Sinai desert with a guide, or visit Hurghada, a hot clubbing and nightlife attraction.
Climb Mount Sinai: A sunrise view from the mountain is considered one of the most breathtaking sights on Earth—but the view is spectacular throughout the day if you don’t want to climb at night to see the sunrise.
Be Amazed in Alexandria: As Egypt’s second-largest city, it’s not surprising that Alexandria has much to offer. History buffs will love seeing Pompey’s Pillar and the ancient city’s catacombs. The Qaitbay Citadel is quite an amazing castle, and the Roman Amphitheater is quite extraordinary as well. The Montazah Palace Gardens are also not to be missed if you visit this city.
